Mount Rwenzori National Park
Mount Rwenzori National Park is one of Uganda’s most awe-inspiring natural destinations. Located in the western region of the country, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was gazetted in 1994 to protect the spectacular Rwenzori mountain range. Mount Rwenzori National Park is the only place in Uganda where you can experience snow-capped peaks, dramatic alpine scenery, and diverse ecosystems—all in one adventure.
The park spans 996 square kilometers and supports a wide range of biodiversity. It is home to over 70 mammal species, including forest elephants, bushbucks, and duikers. Bird lovers can enjoy spotting more than 217 species such as the Rwenzori turaco, the handsome francolin, and the rare long-eared owl. This rich variety makes the park a favorite among hikers, birders, and nature photographers.
Mount Rwenzori National Park is renowned for its stunning vegetation zones. The lower slopes are covered with lush montane forests and bamboo, while higher altitudes reveal heathlands and unique Afro-alpine vegetation like giant lobelias and groundsels. The park’s climate, characterized by frequent rain and occasional sunshine, supports this exceptional plant life.
Adventurous travelers can embark on treks that last from a few days to two weeks, depending on the route. The ultimate challenge is the climb to Margherita Peak (5,109 meters), the third-highest mountain in Africa.
