Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is one place you should see for yourself at least once in a lifetime. This is the home to the kingly 400 mountain gorillas, making up half of their entire population in the world. A very dense forest sitting on 300 km2, the national park has commands the attention of tourists because it is one of the few places where you can find the gorilla.
The black giants go about their uninterrupted life picking fruits and jumping off tree branches while jealously protecting their families. A day with the gorillas will open you to a new world and an appreciation of the wild. This UNESCO World Heritage site was established in 1993 to protect the gorillas, which were under threat. The national park is found within the densely vegetated Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, which is known to be a source of a number of rivers that run towards Lake Edward.
This is one of the few natural rainforests that are still intact. There are trees that age more than 30 years. The national park is home for 120 animal species, including the chimpanzee and the baboon. Given its natural traits, there are 400 plant species that have been identified in the forest on top of the 350 bird species. This is the home of the Batwa.
The Batwa are pygmies who have lived all their lives as hunters and food gatherers. Until recently, their continued stay in the forest had become a threat to the wildlife. The government started a program to resettle them among communities outside the forests. This is still an ongoing exercise.
