At the heart of Uganda’s boisterous tourism is one park that prides itself in having everything together. Surrounded by the Gorilla rich Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the south, the snow-capped Mt Rwenzori in the west and the Chimpanzee Square in Kibale Forest in the north, Queen Elizabeth comes off as the number one national park you should never miss on your trip to Uganda.

It is found in the south western part of Uganda. The park is Uganda’s second largest national park after the Murchison Falls sitting on 1978km2. The park was initially known as Kazinga National Park but was later on named Queen Elizabeth after her visit to the park in 1954. It is home to the calm running Kazinga Channel which connects Lake Edward to Lake George.

The channel runs around the famous Mweya peninsular. The park is boasts of a great wealth of 95 animal and 600 bird species. The park has extensive open savannah fields that touch the horizon which are dotted with antelopes, buffalos and elephants. It is rich in crater lakes which sit at the top of hills. The lake is known for the Katwe salt mines and the craters. Make a memorable stay by visiting the climbing lions at Ishasha and the watch them shred their prey on top of trees as hungry hyenas greedily salivate and wait on the crumbs below them.

Or encounter a herd of the giant elephants they gently cross the roads with a lot of discipline in their fold. The Equator crosses through the park at latitude 0 which explains why the park receives a lot of sunshine. It is always summer at Queen Elizabeth national park. In the nearby Kasese is the defunct Kilembe mines which was home to copper and cobalt mining but only a shadow of its former self stands today. This is also not so far River Nyamwamba that has overtime lost its cool bursting out into floods and changing the terrains of the area. Enjoy this wild with all the plenty of options it has to give.
